Land-Atmosphere Workshop

On October 17, 2022, DOE’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement user facility and DOE’s Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) will co-host a virtual workshop discussing ideas and opportunities to improve understanding of coupled land-atmosphere processes.

Atmospheric and earth systems scientists are welcome to join an open and virtual workshop, “Chemical processing across scales at land-atmosphere interfaces.”

• 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pacific time (11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time) Monday, October 17, 2022.

Co-hosts are the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility and Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL). This workshop will discuss, refine, and collect feedback from members of the Atmospheric System Research (ASR) and Environmental System Science (ESS) program communities about ideas and opportunities to improve understanding of coupled land-atmosphere processes.

Discussion topics include:

• synergistic research toward understanding land-atmosphere biogeochemical processes across scales in rural, urban, and coastal systems
• highlighting opportunities presented by existing ARM field deployments to understand and improve model representations of aerosol, cloud, and land-atmosphere interactions, including key cross-coupling of those areas to explore land-atmosphere feedbacks and aerosol-cloud interactions
• community input on the development of science topics (e.g., ARM Mobile Facility deployments) from the fiscal year 2023 ARM-EMSL call as part of the Facilities Integrating Collaborations for User Science (FICUS) program
• exploration of opportunities at other ARM locations.
