Associate Laboratory Director for Earth and Environmental Sciences Area

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the Associate Laboratory Director for our Earth & Environmental Sciences Area, a world leader in climate, environmental and energy geosciences. Reporting to the Laboratory Director, the Associate Laboratory Director is accountable for strategic planning, people and operations leadership, research quality and integrity, and communication for the Earth & Environmental Sciences Area. The Associate Laboratory Director is also responsible for advancing Berkeley Lab’s stewardship values of team science, innovation, trust, respect, and service, including building and maintaining a culture that is committed to the ideals of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accountability.

The Associate Laboratory Director will lead the development of strategies for harnessing Berkeley Lab’s innovative, multidisciplinary capabilities to contribute to solving the most pressing energy and environmental challenges of our time. Our next director will have the opportunity to build on the Area’s strategic research path set in 2017, and develop new scientific directions and solutions to optimize and sustain the environment, while satisfying growing needs for energy and water resources that will have great impact nationally and globally. The director interacts with external sponsors and other national laboratories, promotes partnerships with academia and industry, and guides the development of externally sponsored research projects and programs consistent with the Laboratory’s overall vision and strategy. They also share responsibility for maintaining productive relationships with the Department of Energy (DOE) offices that support Earth science research, notably the Office of Basic Energy Science, Biological and Environmental Research, Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and Nuclear Energy.

As a key member of the Laboratory’s Senior Leadership Team, this position works closely with the Laboratory Director and Deputy Laboratory Directors to formulate and execute Berkeley Lab’s strategic priorities and initiatives. Together with the other Associate Laboratory Directors, they will actively participate in institutional research and management initiatives, developing cross-Area research proposals and shepherding these efforts through their life cycle. The Associate Laboratory Director will work with their management teams and Operations staff to develop and execute priorities for facility operations and planning. Lastly, while Associate Lab Directors have often continued active research programs at Berkeley Lab, this is not required of the successful candidate.
